What is STARBASE 2.0?
STARBASE 2.0 is an afterschool mentoring program sponsored by the West Virginia STARBASE Academy, a Department of Defense youth program hosted by the 130th Airlift Wing in Charleston. The vision of STARBASE is to raise the interest and improve knowledge and skills of at-risk youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, providing for a highly skilled and educated American workforce.
STARBASE 2.0 combines STEM activities with a relationship-rich, school-based environment to provide the missing link for children making the transition from elementary to middle school. Small teams of middle school students will work after school with volunteer mentors on a variety of hands-on activities.
Who can volunteer?
STARBASE is looking for enthusiastic volunteers with an academic or professional background in a STEM-related field, a desire to work with children, and a willingness to commit to serving 4-6 hours per month throughout the school year. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, successfully pass a criminal background check, and agree to participate in a 2 hour mentor training session.
What projects will we be working on?
STARBASE 2.0 students engage in a wide range of STEM-related activities from forensic science to genetics and model rocketry.
How much planning and preparation will be involved?
STARBASE has a full-time staff that will handle all of the logistics – coordination with the school, ordering supplies, setting up activities prior to club meetings, etc. Mentors may need to take some time to review curriculum modules before club meetings just to make sure you are up to speed and ready to go when the students arrive. All potential mentors are required to attend a brief mentor training session prior to your first club meeting.
How do I sign up?
Simply download and complete a Volunteer Application form. Submit your form via email to USAF.WV.130-AW.LIST.STARBASE@mail.mil . If your application is accepted, we will contact you to schedule a brief mentor training session. That’s it!
NOTE: ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS A FINGERPRINT BACKGROUND CHECK CONDUCTED BY THE WV STATE POLICE.
